Paris 2024 Olympics: Men's Golf set for thrilling climax in Paris
3 August, 2024 - Cupar, Scotland: August 4, 1936 is the day Jesse Owens won the Long Jump at the Berlin Olympics, defeating German Luz Long, jumping an Olympic record distance of 8.06 metres.
August 4, 1948 is the day Fanny Blankers-Koen won the 80m Hurdles at the London Olympics at Wembley Stadium.
August 4, 1984 is the day Carl Lewis won the 100 metres final, the first of his four gold medals in Los Angeles.
August 4, 2012 was 'Super Saturday' - Great Britain's greatest ever day at an Olympic Games. Jessica Ennis-Hill won the Haptathlon, Sir Mo Farah won the 10,000 metres, Greg Rutherford won the Long Jump, Great Britain won the Men's Coxless Fours and Women's Lightweight Double Sculls Rowing, and Women's Team Pursuit Cycling. They won a total of 6 Gold Medals, and everyone who watched it will never forget the scenes at the Olympic Stadium.
Now, on August 4, 2024 athletes from several sports have the chance to etch their name into the history of this mythical Olympic day, including the best golfers in the world.
We have a stellar leaderboard, and Great Britain has a serious medal contender in Tommy Fleetwood. Rahm, Schauffele, Matsuyama, McIlroy, Scheffler, Aberg are all in with a chance of medals, and even the home favourite Victor Perez can get involved in the party.
The fans have been out in huge numbers all week, and we are set for a thriller at Le Golf National. The atmosphere has been absolutely electric all week, and Le Golf National has shown its remarkable capability to stage major events.
There has been so much conjecture about what the Olympic Games mean in golf. Are they as big as a Major? Are all the best players here? Guess what? None of that matters, and who cares? The best golfer from 32 countries are at Le Golf National, the official world’s top five golfers are there, the winners of the Masters, PGA Championship and The Open are there. This isn’t the usual American-dominated field, constructed from criteria which unfairly reward players who play on the PGA TOUR. This is a true World Championship.
The winner will be Olympic Champion, and there will be 16 Major Champions crowned in the time between Paris 2024 and LA 2028. The first two modern editions of Olympic Golf have been sensational, but this week at Le Golf National it has gone to new heights. Sunday 4 August is set to be a day to remember.
