It is one of golf's truly iconic moments and images. Seve Ballesteros celebrating what would be the winning putt at the 1984 Open Championship on the 18th green of the Old Course, St Andrews. It is arguably the most famous photograph ever taken of a professional golfer, and one of the standout images of the legendary photographer, David Cannon's 40+ year career.

The photograph became a symbol, the logo of Ballesteros and his foundation, and endures long after his tragic passing some 14 years ago. From 2000 to 2013 some 8 editions of the Seve Trophy were played, pitting teams from Great Britain and Ireland, and Continental Europe against each other.

Now, 12 years after the event's demise it is time to honour the legacy of Seve by creating an award to recognise the very best in golf across multiple categories. The trophy would be golf's version of an Oscar. named and moulded after Seve's likeness and name.

The event could be part of Alfred Dunhill Links Championship week, taking place on the Tuesday evening at Younger Hall, and could feature a Blue carpet to honour Seve's iconic navy blue sweater. The Blue carpet could feature golf content creators and broadcast media speaking to the nominees and attendees prior to the event beginning, in much the same way as happens at the OSCARS and the Ballon D'Or. Many of the celebrities also present to play in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship could be invited, adding further glamour to what would be a showcase event for golf.

Seve's would be awarded in the following categories, and would be judged from the week after the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship through to the week before the event, the following year:

(My winners in 2024-2025)

The Seve's would be broadcast across the world on YouTube, and on the likes of Sky Sports Golf in the UK.

It would become a goal for every golfer and everyone in golf to earn a 'Seve', like it is for movie directors and actors to earn an 'OSCAR'.
